While you read, data centres consume
Every answer from an assistant starts in a data centre. This counter shows how much electricity the world’s data centres have used since you arrived on this page.

How I calculate it
According to the International Energy Agency, data centres used about 415 terawatt-hours in 2024, 1.5% of the world’s electricity. Divided by the seconds in a year, that is about 13 megawatt-hours per second. At the rate projected for 2030, 945 TWh, it comes to about 30.
The counter covers all data centres, not only those dedicated to artificial intelligence: AI is the fastest-growing part and the main reason demand will double. For the charges I use the same assumption as the calculator, 12 watt-hours for a full smartphone charge.
